I have to tell you my story. You got me hooked on looking at the KSL.com free classifieds.
A little background-
We have a dog, a Chinese pug, a female that we have had for about 2 years. We also previously had a male that we had for about 10 years and had to have put to sleep because he got so old and sick. We love pugs-they are to us just a special breed of dog that is so sweet and lovable. We have had this female, and I have been saying to my husband-I just know she wants to have puppies, and my husband has said no way.
So, in my perusal of the free classifieds, what do I find one day? A male pug that someone has to give away due to a divorce, he is 4 years old and not fixed. What could be better for us? And my husband said OK. So, I called the phone number. The person got 45 calls about this pug, and she brought him over, and so now we have a male pug!!! And probably soon, based on the activity around the house, we will have a number of puppies. We will try one batch. That may be all, and then we will probably get one of them fixed.
I just want you to know that you have added tremendously to our family. Both our kids want one of the puppies, and we have talked about getting another pug, but it is not something we would have done if I had not seen this ad.
Your "outside the box" ideas can have all kinds of results!!! However, I am not going to look at the ads for a while. I'm afraid I might end up with a giraffe, or a snake, or something. Just kidding.

I am in your feed a family class. I am emailing you as requested. This week I made your granola bar recipe with my children and they loved it. I am impressed with how easy it was. Also, this week we purchased 250 lbs of whole wheat and 50 lbs of oats to add to our food storage. I am excited about learning from your class.

Ashley writes...

I just wanted to let you know I bought a pressure cooker and I love how quickly it cooks. I made your bean recipe and everyone loved it!

MOM! I think someone is ripping me off! I keep finding this ........... being charged to my credit card. I had no idea what it was so I Googled it and a bunch of articles came up..... They have been charging me $12.99 every month since July! I just found this because I was doing my homework on one of your tips, like you said, and keeping track of where I spend my money. (Trevor was able to get the payment stopped and get all his money back on that same day.)

John writes...(college student)

I am really glad that you emphasize spending less. I seriously feel sooo good when I think about keeping a tight budget. I am really going to try hard and do better from month to month with that.
FYI, I did the math on my credit card expenses for October:
GAS/CAR: $139.79
WALMART/Groceries: $59.88
FAST FOOD/SNACKS: $51.25
DATES: $50.69
Other(itunes, gifts, bank fees): $23.49
TOTAL SPENDINGS -- $325.10 for October

I am glad you sent me that email. It gives me a LOT of motivation to not spend money and go into debt. Thanks so much!

I took the advise of one of your tips and I started a little "support group" with my roommate. We have a "Stay on top of Things" schedule. We are keeping track of our exercise, social life, spiritual life and financial life DAILY! I really, really like it. It's really good because we push each other to do it and stay focused and motivated.

Wonderful! wonderful! wonderful!
These are really terrific ideas, tips, recipes...I can't imagine how you have time for anything else.
Thank you so much!

I just looked at all of your newest tips. I watched all of your video clips on Expert Village. It was so motivating. If only it weren't 11:00 p.m I could go make all the things right now. Awesome. I can't wait to try your black bean salsa. I also can't wait to make more whole wheat chocolate chip cookie bars. Good job on all your videos.

Leslie writes...

I am trying to find your TOO DIE FOR cookie recipe! I have been dreaming of them since I snarfed down 2 yesterday at your Feed a Family Workshop.

Karyn writes...

Right now, I am not working. In fact, it was your "Feed a family" class that taught me to get things into storage. I would not have survived these last 4 months without the items I have stored.
I do a lot of dehydrating and bottling also. Always glad to help anyone with these.

Chris writes....

I have been eating cooked wheat for quite awhile but when you added it to spaghetti I was impressed. It really tasted great and stayed with me. I have been eating out of my cupboards without too much meat. Maybe I'll be just as happy not using meat at all. I've been trying the wheat hearts and brown rice for breakfast. They are really good and have really given me a lot of energy. I do payroll taxes for a living and I'm pretty dead by the time I get home at night. I'll try the millet with oats.....sounds good.

Thanks for you help. Chris

I love the idea of always having zip lock bags in my food storage. Anytime that I have leftovers, I bag it up. Also, I am able to keep my homemade bread, homemade granola bars, etc. fresh.

Brianna writes...

I just made some whole wheat blender pancakes and they were to die for! I am going to get into this healthy eating for sure! I LOVE whole grains!

Kelli writes...

Hi Sheryl,
I joined your tips group about a week and a half ago and I just finished reading all of the tips! I am so exited and I already made 3 new things. I took a class from you about 2 years ago, right before I moved here to North Salt Lake. I loved all of your ideas and I have implemented many of your recipes and ideas already, so now I am excited to do even more! I wish I lived closer to do the garden group, but I believe my city is starting a community garden this spring, that I might join.
I am wondering if you have plans to add any recipes for mixes? I have recently tried a few recipes to make my own cream soup mix, chili seasoning, and onion soup mix. They all have worked out so great that I don't plan to ever buy the actual product anymore. And there were only 1 or 2 ingredients that I didn't already have on hand!
Thank you for all your information and the effort you go to to share it with others. I can't wait to go back through the tips and try out more things! (I also hope to recruit a small support group in my area.)

Kelli, mom of 3

I have recently started introducing whole grains to my families diet. We love it. It is great to have recipes and learn what to do with my wheat, and different things that I can do with my beans.

Kirsten writes...

I love the idea of always leaving the house with a healthy snack and water. This has saved me from eating out a lot. Also, since I have hypoglycemia, I have to make sure that I eat often. Otherwise I get very sick. This idea of yours has saved me from becoming sick-many times by being prepared.

Kendra writes...

I love your idea of making nachos out of healthy things like: beans, corn, tomatoes, etc. My family also loves it!

Marlene writes...

I love your chocolate chip breakfast bars. They taste just as good out of the freezer as when I make them fresh. I make them quite often.

Bonnie writes...

I have put into practice your idea of freezing individual portions of food. It has really come into handy for lunch, quick meals.

Melissa writes...

Your Books are awesome. It was so helpful to learn the tools that save a lot of time. I have been purchasing them one at a time. For instance, having a Bosch Kitchen Mixer is saving me a ton of time on making bread, cookies, and all sorts of other things.

Ann writes...

Yes...I love your tips and I want to make peach jam. I plan to go to the Farmer's Market this weekend! You are inspiring me! I want a popcorn maker for Christmas!!

Mary writes...

I mushed up all the pears I had, and if I had only had some Clear Jel it would have been so easy to make it into jam. I put it in little baggies and put them in the freezer. It's amazing how you can make jam for almost no cost!!!! I also tried a peach smoothie. It was great!!! Next year I'd like to find some strawberries.

Amy writes

Thanks for all your tips...I love them! I can't wait to start using fresh wheat and make YOUR pancakes and make your jam.

Julia writes....

These tips make me aware of what I am spending money on, and gets me to think about whether I really want to. For example, I have taken the daily paper for several years. I realized that really all I do is look at it, mostly just the headlines, and the ads, and I really don't read very much of it. Do I still want to continue to do this? Or are there other, less expensive, more effective ways I can get the same information? Go on-line and read the paper? Read a newsmagazine at the library? I haven't decided yet, but it is something I am thinking about.

Jana writes....

One thing I really liked was the idea about checking your bank account to find out how much you actually spend on food, and going from there to document and calculate it. This is a very good idea I think, because it is documented, concrete, factual evidence of what you are doing and how you are changing what you are doing. It gives you concrete proof that you are making changes, not just feeling like you are, or trying to.

Mindy writes....

I like the recipes, of course, and the links for recipes and cooking items. I have also been thinking about getting a slow cooker, as that would be an easy way for me to start doing more cooking in a very simple way, so I appreciated that information.

Jennifer writes....

The Feed a Family Tips help me create connections between people that aren't normally there when you just go somewhere and buy what you need. That's a neat byproduct of the service you offer! Thanks!

Linda writes....

One of the most important things that these tips get me to do is to "think outside the box". We are all so used to using money that thinking of other ways is very refreshing. When we picked the fruit at a vacant lot, and then seeing all the free wood that was there, it made me start thinking about ways to get free wood, because we have a fireplace, and that made me start thinking that there must be lots of other ways to function without the use of money. And one of your tips was about how to get free wood, and other free stuff. That was very helpful. It also helps create connections between people that aren't normally there when you just go somewhere and buy what you need. That's another neat byproduct.

Sonia writes....

The tips make me feel more in control of my life. We do have choices as to what we can do to improve our lives. We are not just at the mercy of rising prices and an imploding economy, and greedy high paid executives.

Judy writes...

I have a problem fixing lunch for work every day, so your idea about doing things in quantity to store is very helpful and I am going to work on that for my lunches.

Becky writes:

I liked the links to specific documentation for the food additives and all the problems they can cause. Also the specific nutritional information about certain foods. I have been interested in this before, but I have never taken the time before to really read much about it. It's pretty scary when you really find out about it.

Mandy writes....

I am amazed at the amount of good, specific, step by step information in such a short amount of time. Your steps to implement things are specific and concrete, which is very good.
